WHAT TO EXPECT
The first thing you will notice about Heritage is that the church sits in the middle of a small pasture – in fact, next door you can see horses grazing. You may not notice this the first time you come to HBC because you will be more concerned about actually finding the place, but the second time, you may begin to notice that all reminders of busyness, chaos, work – all the things of life taking your focus off of God – have been left behind. You might even feel God ease the stress off your shoulders as you pull into one of the parking lots where there are plenty of easy and accessible parking places.
Regardless of which entrance you use, you will see signs of who we are. On the south side is a sign telling you, “We Delight in God.” On the north side of the church are two crosses near the roof-line. Most expect 3 crosses – isn’t that what’s displayed everywhere? I mean, Jesus and the two thieves – that’s what’s in all the pictures. Two crosses isn’t a cost-cutting feature. We look to a different verse from the Gospels in which Jesus says, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.”
But this is all on the outside of the building – and outsides can be deceiving. The true test of what this church is all about is in the people and as you walk in the door, the first sound you will probably hear is laughter – real, honest-to-goodness laughter of friends happy to be see each other and so glad to be together in this place. We wander the halls greeting each other, catching up with lives as we head for group classes or corporate worship!
Once inside, take a moment to look around the foyer at the pictures on the walls – most are pictures of the people of Heritage – because our people are important. We care about our people and want you to get to know them.
The volunteers at the Welcome Center can answer all of your questions or find someone who can. They’ll tell you about the different Sunday School classes and will even “deliver” you to the class you choose. Our Sunday morning classes love new people and visitors and do everything they can to make you feel welcome.
After the Sunday morning classes, when you enter the sanctuary, look around and you will see other signs of who we are – banners of God decorate the walls. God is truly the priority of Heritage.
The pastors will be wandering the aisles, stopping to greet and visit with people. Pick any seat you want – even though people tend to sit in the same place every Sunday, we’re okay with newcomers taking our place. And since we do tend to camp in the same spot each week, we notice new faces around us and make a point of greeting that new face – sometimes it’s standing room only around a stranger. (If you don’t want to be mobbed, stand up with the home folks and start shaking hands with those around you. Everyone will just assume you’re a regular that usually sits on a different side of the auditorium.)
Once the preaching starts, you will truly understand what we’re all about – the truth from God’s Word.
